Express Auto Service & Repair

Simply stated, it is to help you drive your car safely down the road without battling the steering wheel and being the cause of an accident! So just what is the difference between a wheel alignment and balancing. Consider the following explanations:

Wheel Alignment - To avoid improper and abnormal tread wear on your tires, make sure they are in correct alignment. If your car is out of alignment, one part of the tire will be making contact with the road more on one side then the other, thus causing balding to the contact side of the tire. You may need to purchase new tires earlier than usual if the rubber is not wearing evenly.

So what is wheel alignment? It is a method of straightening out the direction in which all four of your wheels travel together. The car is raised on a lift and then attached to a computer for a diagnostic test so that is can be corrected with mathematical precision. This computer measures the degrees and angle of the position of the two front wheels and then the two rear wheels.

Tire Balancing - This is done one wheel at a time. The wheel is removed from the car and placed on a machine and spun to figure which side is the heaviest. Once this is determined, a small piece of lead is placed onto the wheel at the opposite side. The piece of lead is of a specific weight that will balance out the heavier side of the wheel. Once the weight is the same on all sides of the wheel, the wheel will spin on the machine with ease.

Why is this so important, you ask? During higher speeds on the roadway, an unbalanced tire will begin to shake and cause vibration in the steering wheel. This will eventually damage your tires, your suspension system, and steering system.

So why wheel alignment and balancing is necessary for your vehicle? To allow your vehicle to travel smoothly and safely down the road!
