Express Auto Service & Repair

If your car is starting to perform poorly or suddenly loud noises are coming from the muffler, it may be an indication there is a leak in your vehicle's exhaust system. Not many drivers think much about their vehicle's exhaust system until they start to experience problems. The exhaust system performs important functions to keep your vehicle running efficiently. If problems go neglected for too long, not only will it cause a nuisance such as a noisy muffler or damage to your car, it can also be harmful to your health.

A leak in the exhaust system reduces fuel economy and creates a lot of noise from the muffler. It also poses a danger to your health. If you have a leak, harmful fumes are potentially reaching the inside of your car (especially with leaks near the exhaust manifold). It only takes a small amount of carbon monoxide (a by-product of emissions) to impair your driving and your health.

Leaks to the exhaust system can be caused for two reasons:

  • Road Conditions: Because the exhaust system is mounted on the underside of your vehicle, it is exposed to a lot of road conditions that can cause parts to break down over time. In older cars especially, normal wear and tear means that they are especially vulnerable to leaks and should be inspected on a regular basis.
  • Rust: The water vapor produced by the catalytic convertor can also cause problems by causing rust. When you only take your car short trips, the water vapor does not get expelled. So, it condenses back into water, which can cause rust. Even worse, sulfur is another by-product in engine emissions. If it mixes with the water, it can form a corrosive acid that eats away at the exhaust system.

Remember: Stay safe! The next time you are changing your oil or inspecting your tires, take time to have an inspection of your vehicle's exhaust system and muffler for leaks.
