Express Auto Service & Repair

The condition of your vehicle’s transmission is crucial as it delivers power to the wheels and allows movement forward and backward. Keeping it in good working condition is fairly simple and relatively inexpensive. If you wait for signs of problems before scheduling transmission service, the damage is already taking place and you will be looking at a costly transmission repair. Be sure to follow the time and/or mileage interval that manufacturers recommend for your specific vehicle.

So how often should you get a transmission service? Does it include a transmission fluid change? Many vehicle owners don’t understand that a transmission has a maintenance schedule just as oil changes, tire rotations, air filter, etc., to keep your car running smoothly.

Do you know the difference between a transmission flush and a transmission fluid change? A transmission fluid flush usually involves connecting your transmission to a machine that completely flushes the transmission fluid out of your vehicle until the lines are clean, then refills your transmission with new fresh fluid. A transmission fluid change means the fluid drains out with gravity. A fluid change usually does not drain all of the fluid out but does replace most of the old with fresh transmission fluid. Any of these services can extend the life of your transmission.

Here are a couple of maintenance suggestions for automatic and manual transmissions:

  • Automatics. Automatic transmissions should be serviced about every 15 months or 15,500 miles. If it's well looked after, and you don't live in an area of extreme year-long heat, the transmission can last in excess of 124,000 miles. However, transmissions that are not serviced can potentially fail after half that number of miles. If your vehicle receives heavy use, such as towing heavy items (such as a boat or trailer), or if you do a lot of accelerating or decelerating, you may want to have a transmission fluid change about every 30,000 miles, depending on the make and model of your vehicle.
  • Manuals. Manual transmission allows a driver to control the engine RPMs, which means power is there when needed, as well as providing better fuel economy. At about every other oil change, ask your mechanic to check the transmission fluid level to see if it needs to be topped-off or changed.

Remember: The best care you can give your car is to schedule maintenance services as recommended by the vehicle manufacturer, including transmissions.
