Express Auto Service & Repair

If the term “engine repair” fills you with fear, please read a little further. Like many drivers, you want your vehicle to last you as long as possible. But your engine has worn out and you are headed toward a costly engine repair! If your engine has given up and you don’t want to purchase another vehicle, an engine rebuild could be a good alternative.

Consider what it would cost you to purchase a new vehicle versus the cost of an engine repair. Keeping your current vehicle and having the engine rebuilt might be the better financial decision for you, especially if your vehicle is still in good condition overall.

Most vehicle owners have heard of an engine rebuild, but don’t really understand why it may be necessary. The two main reasons are:

  • Worn engine bearings -- The moving parts of the engine (such and the crankshaft, rods, and pistons) are mounted on bearings lubricated by the engine oil. When these bearings become worn, they make loud knocking sounds and can eventually cause engine failure. These bearings are designed to last thousands of miles, but wear is accelerated if the vehicle is consistently run on low oil levels or dirty oil.
  • Poorly-sealed piston rings -- Piston rings seal in the expanding gasses created by the burning of gasoline within the engine. As piston rings wear, they can no longer effectively seal the cylinders. This results in a condition called "blow-by,” (oil from the crankcase leaks past the worn rings and is burned with the fuel mixture in the cylinder).

What happens during an engine rebuild?

  • First, the lower half of the engine (the “short block”) is removed, disassembled, and cleaned so that the condition of the block can be properly assessed.
  • The piston rings, bearings, and sometimes the pistons themselves are replaced, depending on their condition.
  • The internal surfaces of the cylinders are reconditioned to ensure that the new piston rings can form a proper seal. The cylinder head may also be reconditioned at the same time.
  • Finally, the engine is reassembled and installed back in the vehicle, better than new!

Once the engine is rebuilt, you can be confident that everything has been closely inspected and worn parts replaced. Rebuilt engines are generally known to be reliable and backed by warranties. Before making a final decision, be sure to check with your auto shop on their warranty for rebuilt engines.
