This is an important question. First of all, do you know what the job of the exhaust system is, which includes the muffler? It serves two main functions—to redirect and reduce exhaust system noise and to help filter gases out of the engine. A bad muffler can disrupt the entire exhaust system. Unfortunately, it is only when strange noises, odors, or smoke starts coming from the muffler that the exhaust system gets any attention. By the time this happens, some damage may have already taken place, and some form of repair will be required.

In addition to normal wear and tear, there are two common causes of damage to the exhaust system and muffler:

  • Exposure to road conditions: Generally, mufflers last about five to seven years. But because the muffler is mounted on the underside of your vehicle, it is exposed to damaging road conditions, such as salt on the roads, speed bumps, and potholes.
  • Driving short distances: Rust and corrosion can occur in a muffler from continuously driving short distances. Water vapor produced by the catalytic convertor doesn’t have enough time to fully evaporate or get expelled, condensing back into the water causing the muffler to rust.

Here are five ways to tell if there is damage occurring in the exhaust system:

  1. Listen to your vehicle – A broken or damaged muffler or a leaky exhaust will cause thumping, clunking, or rattling noises in the exhaust pipe.
  2. Visually check the muffler – You may need to ask your mechanic to check your muffler for rust as it will require lifting the car. A small amount of rust on the surface is normal so long as it doesn’t penetrate the metal.
  3. Check your car’s temperature – A damaged muffler can cause blockages in the exhaust system, resulting in abnormally high engine temperatures or loss of power.
  4. Visiting the Pump – Exhaust leaks can affect the engine’s oxygen sensors. If these sensors are affected, more fuel will be used as the sensors cannot accurately assess how much exhaust is in the system.
  5. Sense of smell – A persistent smell in your vehicle may indicate that your exhaust system isn’t working to filter exhaust gases and harmful fumes out of your car.

Remember: If your muffler is getting noisy, have the exhaust system inspected for leaks. A leaky exhaust system makes a noisy muffler, decreases fuel efficiency, and toxic fumes, such as carbon monoxide, can enter the cabin of your car.
