Express Auto Service & Repair

At some point in time, if you keep your car long enough, it is inevitable that a tune up will be needed to keep it running strong. Considered as basic preventive maintenance, a tune up helps maintain your vehicle’s power and performance, giving you many more miles of reliable service.

But just how often should you get a car tune up? There is a recommended time for a tune up listed in your owner’s manual. However, if your vehicle starts to lose power, such as going up a hill, overtaking a slower vehicle, for example, schedule a car diagnostics. It may simply be time for a tune up! At that time, your mechanic can find any pending problems in the operating systems, engine, transmission, oil and gas tanks, and exhaust system.

Here are a few problems you may start to experience indicating it’s time for a tune up:

  • Check engine light illuminates.
  • Engine idles rough or stalls when you accelerate or a brake.
  • Decrease in miles per gallon, which means that you are spending more at the pump.
  • Shifting problems, such as slipping, jerking, or hard to put into gear.
  • Unusual vibrations are felt in the steering wheel or seat.

So what is the average interval for a tune up? Older cars with non-electric ignition systems will need a tune up about every 10,000 to 12,000 miles to replace spark plugs, filters, and fluids. However, today’s newer vehicles can go from 25,000 up to 100,000 miles before needing a tune up. Because they are equipped with electronic ignitions and fuel injectors, computer processors, and sensors, it’s a little harder to know when it’s time for a tune up. This makes it especially important to have car diagnostics so you know what’s going on under the hood!
