Express Auto Service & Repair

Many drivers understand that it is normal for an engine to produce toxic gases during the internal combustion process. As part of the exhaust system, these toxic fumes are then expelled from the muffler. Unfortunately, because the exhaust system is located under the car, its condition is often overlooked even though it plays an important role in engine performance.

If you are wondering how do you know if your muffler is bad, the signs below are fairly obvious indicators of problems in the exhaust system:

  • Noisy engine – If the exhaust pipes or tubes break or crack, they can leak exhaust, resulting in an extra noisy engine, which can become louder during acceleration.
  • Obnoxious odor – If any of the exhaust pipes are damaged and leak exhaust, the fumes can enter the body of the car, giving off a smell of fuel and motor oil.
  • Loss of performance – Damaged or corroded pipes can produce an exhaust leak causing performance issues, such as a decrease in power and fuel efficiency due to the loss of back pressure.
  • Dragging muffler – If the muffler, or tailpipe, is visible, it can be severely damaged coming in with the ground.

A word of advice:  Be sure to have the condition of the muffler and exhaust system checked on a regular basis. Even though they are built to withstand the high stress and heat of the engine, because they are on the underside of your vehicle, they are prone to corrosion and rust.
