Express Auto Service & Repair

With the price of new vehicles on the rise, it makes sense to take good care of your vehicle, which means not skimping on quality oil changes. Using inferior oil may find you spend a lot of time and dollars in an auto repair shop. Regular oil change intervals are the key to increasing the performance of your engine and enhancing the longevity of your vehicle, possibly up to 200,000 miles or more!

The type and quality of motor oil play a significant role in the performance of an engine. Oil serves to lubricate moving parts and fights against an engine’s two biggest enemies--heat and friction. Here are a few oil change facts that you should know to help preserve your vehicle’s engine for increased performance and longevity:

  1. Use the Right Weight – Knowing the right weight to use for colder climates (typically 5W-30) or for warmer climates (typically 10W-40) will help the overall performance of your engine.
  2. Follow the Manufacturer's Recommendations – Be sure to use the type of motor oil within the recommended guidelines of your vehicle's manufacturer. Using the wrong type could void the manufacturer’s warranty.
  3. Synthetic vs. Petroleum - Synthetic oil is superior in providing better protection, allows for increased oil change intervals, greater resistance to breakdown, improved cold weather starts, and better fuel mileage. Synthetics may cost a little more initially, but you may save money in the long run with increased intervals between oil changes and fewer breakdowns. Petroleum motor oils provide adequate protection but are more prone to breakdown, sludge, and a required oil change every 3,000 miles.
  4. Clean Oil – Determine the appropriate type of oil for your engine and the correct oil change interval and then stick to it! Engines produce metal fragments that are harmful to an engine. Routine oil changes help to "flush" out these fragments. Keep a record of any service or repairs performed on your vehicle.
  5. Choose a quality filter - A high-quality filter adds extra protection and is worth the extra cost.
