Express Auto Service & Repair

At some point in time, every driver has probably experienced problems starting their car. One day it starts just fine, and the next day you’re stranded in the driveway. The engine may crank too slowly, or it may not crank at all. Or you may be hearing grinding or whirring sounds when trying to start your car. Because starters are designed to last for at least 100,000 miles, and possibly the lifetime of a car, head straight to your auto shop to have your car battery and alternator checked out. Many times they are the cause of your starting problems.

However, if the battery and the alternator have been ruled out as the cause of the starting problem, you may be wondering what causes a car starter to go bad? The brushes, gears, and coil windings within the starter itself may be worn, the solenoid has gone bad, or there are loose bolts so that the starter cannot engage when the key is turned in the ignition. If your car ever cranks but won’t start, don’t keep forcing it as you could make the problem a lot worse.

Another reason why a car starter goes bad is from poor installation. If the bolts holding the starter to the engine are loose, they cannot act as the ground for the electrical current, causing damage to the flywheel and starter.

Tip to Remember: If your starting problems are intermittent, be sure to have the starter itself, the alternator, and the battery inspected to pinpoint the cause of your starting problems.
