Express Auto Service & Repair

With the school year started, there are many more teenagers going back and forth to school and other activities. As a parent, you have spent years protecting your children from all sorts of dangers on the road and off. Your teen is now starting to drive and you want to make sure they stay safe! Taking care of all recommended car maintenance items is one of the first steps of preparation for the safety of your teen driver. Because of a teen's lack of experience, they may not recognize signs of vehicle maintenance issues.

Parents who impose driving restrictions have teens that typically engage in less risky driving and are involved in fewer crashes. Before handing over the car keys, have your teenage driver agree to these five rules:

  1. No Cell Phones – Talking or texting on a cell phone while driving significantly reduces reaction time to the circumstances around you, regardless of experience.
  2. No Extra Passengers – A study shows that teen drivers were two-and-a-half times more likely to engage in potentially risky behaviors when driving with a teenage peer compared to when driving alone. Research further shows that the risk of a fatal crash goes up in direct relation to the number of teenagers in the car.
  3. No Speeding -- Speeding is a major factor for teen drivers involved in fatal crashes. Remind your teen to always follow the posted limit and of the potential consequences of speeding.
  4. No Alcohol – Teen drivers are at far greater risk of death in crashes involving alcohol than adults. Plus, if they survive a crash, they will have to face the consequences of breaking the law. They may also lose academic eligibility, college acceptance, and scholarship awards.
  5. Buckle up -- Wearing seat belts is the absolute best way to protect your teen driver and their passengers.

Remember: As a parent, you are the #1 role model to your teen for safe driving. Set the right example yourself by following the rules above every time you get in the car. "Practice what you preach" as the old saying goes!

Make sure your teen driver is safe behind the wheel by having required vehicle maintenance services taken care of promptly.
