Express Auto Service & Repair

Has your vehicle failed the emissions test for vehicle registration? There could be several reasons why. A simple engine service could take care of any issues, or it could also mean a complete engine rebuild. Your trusted auto repair mechanic can run a diagnostics test and help you get your car back in shape!

Below are listed several common reasons for emissions failure.

1. Failing EVAP System – The "Evaporative Emission Control System" prevents gas vapors from being released into the air. This could be a simple fix by replacing a worn or cracked hose or a loose or faulty gas cap.

2. Bad O2 Sensor – The O2 sensor monitors exhaust fumes which may cause issues for your vehicle such as overheating or loss of engine power. If this sensor malfunctions, it will cause a failure because it may increase the hazardous fumes from the exhaust. This, too, can be replaced without major engine service.

3. Rich Fuel Mixture – The test could read high CO2 levels often due to a rich air/fuel mixture. Some of the causes include a weak ignition, leaky injectors, contaminated oxygen sensor and higher than normal fuel pressure.

4. Malfunctioning Air Injection System – The injection system reduces the emission of carbon monoxide by forcing fresh air into the exhaust of the engine. If this malfunctions, the engine is not able to control the high levels of dangerous gasses emitted into the air.

5. Defective Ignition Systems – If high levels of hydrocarbons are detected during the emissions test, your vehicle will most definitely fail. This could be caused by defective spark plugs, wires or over advanced ignition timing.

Any one of these issues can cause the failure of an emissions test. If your vehicle has been properly maintained, a simple replacement part rather than a complete engine rebuild will get your car back on the road for you and the environment.
